DIY Organic Face Cleanser: A Skincare Specialist's Step-by-Step Guide

Making your own organic face cleanser is simpler than you think — but getting the pH right matters. Here is an expert-formulated recipe using Coco Glucoside, Castile soap, and skin-safe essential oils.

Welcome to our How to Make series. In each instalment, we guide you through creating organic skincare products at home. This edition covers face cleansers — one of the most important products in any skincare routine, and one of the most straightforward to make correctly.

Why pH Matters More Than Most Recipes Acknowledge

Healthy skin maintains an acid mantle — a slightly acidic surface with a pH of approximately 4.5 to 5.5. This acidity is critical: it supports the skin microbiome, maintains barrier integrity, and keeps moisture in. Many DIY cleanser recipes skip this detail. Castile soap, for example, has a pH of around 9 to 10 — highly alkaline. Used straight, it disrupts the acid mantle and can trigger dryness, increased sebum production, and sensitivity.

The key is dilution. At the ratios in this recipe, the alkalinity of Castile soap is balanced by the distilled water and oil components to produce a cleanser that cleans effectively without stripping the skin's natural barrier.

Understanding the Surfactant — Why Coco Glucoside Works

Coco Glucoside is derived from coconut oil and fruit sugars. It is classified as a non-ionic surfactant — meaning it cleans without carrying an electrical charge, which makes it significantly gentler on the skin's lipid layer than anionic surfactants like SLS. It is biodegradable, approved by ECOCERT for certified organic products, and suitable for all skin types including sensitive. The optional addition at the end of this recipe enhances foam without compromising the formula's gentleness.

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup unscented Castile soap (look for certified organic versions)
  • 2/3 cup distilled water (tap water introduces minerals and microbes that shorten shelf life)
  • 1 tablespoon grapeseed oil (lightweight, non-comedogenic, rich in linoleic acid for barrier support)
  • 15 drops tea tree essential oil (Melaleuca alternifolia — antimicrobial; proven effective against Cutibacterium acnes)
  • 5 drops lavender essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia — anti-inflammatory and calming)
  • 3 drops lemon essential oil (brightening; omit if using cleanser before sun exposure — phototoxic)
  • Optional: 2 tablespoons Coco Glucoside for improved foam

Method

  • Sterilise your mixing bowl and storage bottle with boiling water or isopropyl alcohol and allow to dry completely
  • Combine the Castile soap and distilled water in the bowl and stir gently — avoid vigorous whisking, which creates excess bubbles
  • Add the grapeseed oil and stir to incorporate
  • Add the essential oils and stir until evenly distributed
  • If using Coco Glucoside, fold in gently at this stage
  • Transfer to a pump or squeeze bottle using a funnel — a pump dispenser minimises contamination over time

Safety Notes and Shelf Life

Always patch-test a new formula on the inner wrist for 24 hours before applying to your face. Essential oils can cause sensitisation when used at high concentrations — do not be tempted to increase the quantities listed. Store in a cool, dark place and use within 4 to 6 weeks. If you see any change in colour, smell, or texture, discard and make a fresh batch.

To use: apply a small amount to damp skin, massage in gentle circular motions for 30 to 60 seconds, and rinse with lukewarm water. Avoid hot water — it strips the acid mantle and contributes to transepidermal water loss.
